But there are so many different EQs out there, how do you know which ones are for you?

You might be thinking your DAW’s channel EQ is perfectly fine. But not all EQs are the same. There’s more types than you might think.

Here’s the 15 best EQ Plugins on the market today:

This article will teach you about the common styles of EQ and how to use them to shape the perfect sound.

Let’s dive in!

Analog EQ

Early EQs were all analog. Some of the earliest equalizer designs are still around today.

Engineers covet these analog beauties for the musically pleasing way they shape sounds. The musical qualities are the result of the unique circuit design of each unit.

Certain EQs became so sought after that plugin designers developed software to emulate them as closely as possible in the digital domain—leading to a mind-boggling ocean of plugin choices.

So what are the different styles of analog EQ? How do they work? What are they used for and where do they work best?

There’s no hard and fast rules when it comes to choosing an EQ. But there are some helpful guidelines that will help you get started with the classic designs.

Pultec-style EQ

The Pultec EQP-1A is the most sought after EQ ever. Well-preserved original units can sell for over $10,000.

Fortunately for us, the EQP-1A has a long history of software emulation. Today’s Pultec-style plugins can sound good—if you know how to use them.

Pultec-style EQ can work wonders to subtly boost top end or extend lows. It can even make broad EQ enhancements without sacrificing any of the original vibe of the sound.

Since the EQP-1A hails from the earliest era of equalizers, it’s control scheme is a little less intuitive than modern designs.

The bandwidth control affects both the high and low band, but low band works differently from the high band.

For the low band, the boost and attenuate knobs are both linked to one of four frequency options. This quirk allows you to both boost and cut at the selected frequency.

The overlapping filters create a steep bump that’s fantastic for boosting the fundamental frequencies of low end instruments.

The high band has separate frequency options for boosting and cutting with overlaps at 5 and 10 kHz.

These controls are interactive and can result in some unique equalization curves.

SSL console strips did a lot to inform our idea of what a modern EQ is.

Classic features we’re familiar with today like integrated high/low-pass filters and variable Q were popularized by these consoles.

The SSL consoles are famous for their incredibly powerful filters.

Experienced engineers often refer to API as the “American” sound in contrast to the “British” Neve tone.

They’re two sides of the same classic console coin.

If you’re a fan of music from the 60’s and 70’s, there’s a good chance some of your favourite records were recorded one of these desks.

The classic API EQ comes in a three band (550a) or four-band (550b) flavour.

The bands don’t have individual Q controls, but the EQ is designed so that the Q becomes progressively sharper as you apply more extreme cuts or boosts.

Digital EQ

BootEQ MKII by Variety Of Sound

As we always say, if you need the best of the best audio processing effects at no price, you can hardly get any better ones than the ones offered by VOS and TDR. These guys are a blessing to the pro audio community, and their philanthropic acts are highly appreciated. As seen in the UI, BootEQ MK2 is an analogue styled Vintage Tube Preamp Equalizer plugin. Though it is not particularly modelled after any particular hardware, but the UI is reminiscent of the SSL EQ292. The most lovable thing about this EQ is that it subtly adds some nice color to a sound that accumulates to become pleasing and desirable. The preamp section’s low filter in addition with the EQ’s low cut section are capable of delivering a tight and focused bass low end. However, the limitations to this plugin is that it is in VST format only and is only compatible with a 32bit SSE system VST host running at 44,1 or 48kHz sample rate. So if you work at higher sample rates, this plugin is not for you.

Soneq by Sonimus

From Sonimus of Satson and Britson console emulation fame comes SonEQ, a highly praised free EQ plugin in the pro audio community. This plugin combines the features of various vintage EQ models into one, with an attractive and intuitive UI which is ‘foolproof-ingly’ labelled. SonEQ is a three band equalizer split into the three major segments of low, mid, and high bands. It spots two filters- highpass and lowpass at the bottom part of the panel, and has a preamp stage with integrated bass booster. Unlike BootEQ above, it is 64bit and can support sample rates up to 192kHz. The overall feel of the plugin can be described as warm and nice. These characters are delivered by its two separate saturation stages. first stage which is a tube emulation brings out transients and adds depth, punch and width to the sound. While the second stage smoothens the transients. The drive knob administers the saturation, the more you push, the more the color. Another gem worth having.

Luftikus by IKJB

Luftikus is an analog modelled EQ with fixed half-octave bands. It is a six band EQ which includes a 2.5 kHz shelf and an additional high frequency boost ranging from 2.5 kHz up to 20kHz and above. The plugin made some improvements to the hardware by allowing deeper cuts and it adds a volume preservation algorithm which can be toggled on/of with the ‘keep-gain’ switch. This feature helps preserve initial overall gain after cuts and boosts to avoid drastic volume changes. It also includes an ‘analog’ switch for toggling on/off the analogue type saturation, plus the ‘mastering’ button which is obviously useful while using the EQ for mastering purpose. Luftikus’ beautiful and colorful user interface makes it appealing to work with. It does a good job when it comes to essential equalizing tasks.

Pushtec 5+1A by Leftover Lasagne

Pushtec 5+1A is a freebie EQ gem which was born out of KVR Developers Challenge of 2006. It was originally coded by Leonardo Lasagne, with a little help from Christian Budde. Pushtec 5+1A is a 6 band midrange and program EQ that is based on a circuit replication of two of the most regarded vintage analog EQs. It combines the features of a superb program EQ with a rare midrange EQ to deliver a very flexible versatile tool for mixing and mastering tasks. This plugin improves on the flaws of the modelled hardwares by eliminating their shortcomings, while still delivering the feel and character of vintage sonics. The online popularity of this plugin, in spite of the fact that the developer has no specific official site to present it on, speaks volume of how the news of its goodness has spread like wildfire.

PTEq-X by Ignite Amps

Free Dynamic Eq Vst

Yet another vintage hardware emulating EQ. This one is a color-box EQ, something like a pack of crayon due to its different flavors of saturation. This is because the maker tried to capture every character on the signal paths of the modelled EQs. Though this EQ might look like a Pultec modelled plugin at first glance, it is not entirely so. As seen on the segmented UI, it actually combines the features of three legendary vintage EQ models namely; the PEQ1A, MQ5, and H3C. The EQ showcases Ignite Amp’s proprietary 3rd generation triode stage analog modeling for 4 different tube types. The three different equalization modules have perfect analog curve response even at highest frequencies. The design also included selectable frequencies for the PEQ1A model, which is an improvement to the original hardware design. It spots switchable tube stage modeling for better CPU usage management, and is usable in both mono and stereo applications.
