Sam Smith is back, my babies. The sweet prince of heartbreak has made his glorious return with his second album The Thrill Of It All, and just as expected, people are sobbing over just about every song. But one song in particular has fans in the fetal position on the floor. It's called 'HIM,' and its lyrics will mess you up. So what is Sam Smith's 'HIM' about? The lyrics tell a really powerful story.

The album itself is a mix of love songs and heartbreak songs. It definitely has some more happier tunes than his first album In The Lonely Hour had, but it wouldn't be Sam Smith if he didn't wreck our emotions for most of the record, so here we are, ugly crying while listening to 'HIM.' The song is basically about Smith's sexuality and grappling with the feeling that there's no place in religion for him because he's gay. The song starts off with,

Holy Father, we need to talk. I have a secret that I can’t keep. I’m not the boy that you thought you wanted. Please don’t get angry, have faith in me.
Say I shouldn’t be here but I can’t give up his touch. It is him I love, it is him. Don’t you try and tell me that God doesn’t care for us. It is him I love, it is him I love.

Fans are in love with the song, saying it's one of the best on the album.

The rest of Sam Smith's 'HIM' lyrics go:

I walk the streets of Mississippi. I hold my lover by the hand. I feel you staring when he is with me. How can I make you understand?
Say I shouldn’t be here but I can’t give up his touch. It is him I love, it is him. Don’t you try and tell me that God doesn’t care for us. It is him I love, it is him I love. Ohh, ohh. Him I love. Ohh, ohh. Him I love. Ohh, ohh. Him I love. Ohh, ohh. Him I love.

Holy Father, judge my sins. I’m not afraid of what they will bring. I’m not the boy that you thought you wanted. I love him.

Smith has another song about his struggles with religion on The Thrill Of It All.

In Sam Smith's 'Pray,' he sings about not having any interest in religion — he's 'turned his back' on it. But sometimes — in desperate, confusing times — praying is the only solution you can think of. He sings,

I'm young and I'm foolish, I've made bad decisions. I block out the news, turn my back on religion. Don't have no degree, I'm somewhat naive. I've made it this far on my own. But lately, that shit ain't been getting me higher. I lift up my head and the world is on fire. There's dread in my heart and fear in my bones. And I just don't know what to say.
Maybe I'll pray, pray. Maybe I'll pray. I have never believed in you, no, but I'm gonna pray.

You won't find me in church (no!), reading the bible (no!). I am still here and I'm still your disciple. I'm down on my knees, I'm begging you please. I'm broken, alone, and afraid. I'm not a saint, I'm more of a sinner. I don't wanna lose, but I fear for the winners. When I try to explain, the words run away. That's why I am stood here today.
And I'm gonna pray, pray. Maybe I'll pray, pray for a glimmer of hope. Maybe I'll pray, pray. Maybe I'll pray. I've never believed in you, no, but I'm gonna.
Won't you call me? Can we have a one-on-one, please? Let's talk about freedom. Everyone prays in the end. Everyone prays in the end. Won't you call me? Can we have a one-on-one, please? Let's talk about freedom. Everyone prays in the end. Everyone prays in the end.

Oh, and I'm gonna pray, I'm gonna pray. I'm gonna pray, pray for a glimmer of hope. Maybe I'll pray, pray. Maybe I'll pray. I've never believed in you, no, but I'm gonna pray.

Listening to 'HIM' and 'Pray' proves Smith has been thinking about religion a lot since In The Lonely Hour. If you're not ready to sob for the next couple of hours, then don't listen to The Thrill Of It All until you get home from work/school/life today. You'll need your bed for comfort.
