  • Hi,
Did you run SteamVR Performance Test?
If that tool said 'VR Ready', it might not be so much issue.
  • I bought iMac 2017 (Radeon Pro 580) few days ago and tried run Oculus Rift CV1 on Boot Camp (Windows 10 Home).
But disturbed video displayed on headset and 'Your computer doesn't meet Rift's recommended specifications' message on Oculus Home.
Radeon Pro 580 is should be a 'VR Ready' GPU.

What USB 3.1 to HDMI did you use ? I have the same imac as you and I can not get the Oculus rift to display image. But it works good on my sons PC.

  • Hello,
I am currently having the same issue with my 2017 iMac. Just picked it up and setup the Windows 10 boot camp on the computer. I am running a Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI setup, and I am getting audio out of rift headset but without any video. Drivers, software, and all are up to date but the Oculus App is indicating that the computer does not meet the minimum requirements to run Oculus. This could be a driver issue or a display port issue surrounding the thunderbolt 3. Obviously the hardware requirements hit the minimum VRAM size ( mine is the 8GB Radeon Pro 580 ) and I have multiple friends running Oculus through a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter successfully.
At this time I am looking at a poorly built Thunderbolt 3 adapter, Boot Camp driver conflict, or Radeon driver conflict through a boot camp as my main culprits.
If anyone has any insight please shoot it my way. I am a Genius with Apple and have been digging into the resources I have looking for a resolution.

The oculus app states your computers performance does not meet the minimum requirements.
    - I ran the compatibility app from oculus and it states that the processor, ram, and USB 3 passes but the video card does not meet the minimum performance requirements.
I appreciate the response. I am going to review that thread and share my experience.

Ok well I have the msi rx480 8g gaming x card and it works quite well so I can't see an issue with the rx580 as they are almost the same architecture, most rx480 can be flashed to a 580 but I think they will run slightly hotter than a true 580. Haven't bothered to try
  • I'm having a similar issue, all connected, tracking and audio work well but no video. I've ordered another HDMI to thunderbolt adapter, I'll let you know if that works
  • Same issue here: 2017 iMac; AMD Radeon Pro 580 GPU; Intel Core i7 CPU; 16 GB RAM; 4 USB-3 Type-A ports; 2 USB-3 Type-C / Thunderbolt-3 ports. Windows 10 via Boot Camp. The Oculus app warns: 'Your computer doesn't meet Rift's minimum specifications, which can lead to poor experience in VR.' Poor performance verified in various demos.
We went to the AMD website to look for a driver update. Surprisingly, we can't find a driver specific to this GPU. The only match appears to be a generic 'MAC [misspelled with all caps] Graphics > Apple Boot Camp > iMac > Windows 10 - 64 Bit'. The driver release date is 4/5/2016.
Is AMD hiding a newer driver someplace? Or is there some other non-obvious match in their download search tool?
  • Apple OS X and Mac hardware running Windows are not supported at all. Really sorry.

ignore the incompatibility message - I've read a few posts where people have it running very smoothly. from what i've read of others posts, the issue seems to be generally the dongle or the cable. some people swear by one dongle over another.
    I've tried:
Moshi USBc - HDMI 4k dongle
Anker USB-C to HDMI Adapter, Supports 4K/60Hz
these both work for 5-10mins before gradually cutting out.
And I tried the bootcampdrivers instead of the standard drivers too. no difference there.
Oculus support has been zero help, but there is a handful of us playing on the new iMac. surely someone has the solution!!!
  • Try the USB-C to HDMI adaptor sold by APPLE (and manufactured by them) it works perfectly, no glitch, no flicking.. stable video image. I tried 3 adaptors before getting a working one.

Have same 2017 Imac, I7 RX 580, 40 gigs of ram, went to apple store, bought apple cable USBC to HDMi, also has additional usbc, and usb port on it.
Oculas runs great, you just need to add second display, on AMD radeon tool in windows 10.
Everything plays great so far, robo recall is pretty cool, played some steam VR as well, it works great too.
I get the same message..Not sure why occulas is displaying, your computer does not meet minimum specifications, as it seems to work very well, no problems with picture droping out, flashes or anything like that.
Not sure when apple is going to do their native support, as they did the Darth Vader demo in the mac product release apple event this year.

  • The Steam VR performance, says it will run very good, in green.
Played some steam vr stuff, played fine.

this worked a treat, thanks mate!
  • Hi!
Just got my Anker USB-C converter to try with my iMac 2017 today with high expecations but no luck.

In the settings screens all options are green and checked. No compatibility issues, no alert messages, everything seems fine. After the setup I'm getting the sound from headphones, light on the headset is white and stable but no visuals inside. Sometimes split second glitches happen inside the screen but nothing more. All black.
What should I do? Is Apple original converter a solution for that???
    Can anyone help? Thanks.

  • I can confirm that the discontinued version of Apple’s USB C to HDMI adapter works flawlessly. The new model will not work.
  • Hi, I am writing here because it looks like there are many iMac users. I have iMac 2017 (3,4 GHz Intel i5, Radeon Pro 570 4GB, 40GB) and according to karlz28 it's working with Radeon 580 so I guess it probably should working with my iMac too, right? I just need to bought correct USB-C to HDMI adaptor. Can someone link here why is correctly working with iMac and still selling? Has anyone tried HL Alyx with iMac?

  • MacBook Air introduced in 2012 or later
  • MacBook Pro introduced in 2012 or later
  • Mac mini introduced in 2012 or later
  • iMac introduced in 2012 or later1
  • iMac Pro (all models)
  • Mac Pro introduced in 2013 or later

The latest macOS updates, which can include updates to Boot Camp Assistant. You will use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 10.

64GB or more free storage space on your Mac startup disk:

  • Your Mac can have as little as 64GB of free storage space, but at least 128GB of free storage space provides the best experience. Automatic Windows updates require that much space or more.
  • If you have an iMac Pro or Mac Pro with 128GB of memory (RAM) or more, your startup disk needs at least as much free storage space as your Mac has memory.2

An external USB flash drive with a storage capacity of 16GB or more, unless you're using a Mac that doesn't need a flash drive to install Windows.

A 64-bit version of Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro on a disk image (ISO) or other installation media. If installing Windows on your Mac for the first time, this must be a full version of Windows, not an upgrade.

  • If your copy of Windows came on a USB flash drive, or you have a Windows product key and no installation disc, download a Windows 10 disk image from Microsoft.
  • If your copy of Windows came on a DVD, you might need to create a disk image of that DVD.

How to install Windows 10 on Mac

To install Windows, use Boot Camp Assistant, which is included with your Mac.

1. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition

Overclock Mac Pro In Boot Camp 2016

Open Boot Camp Assistant, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. Then follow the onscreen instructions.

  • If you're asked to insert a USB drive, plug your USB flash drive into your Mac. Boot Camp Assistant will use it to create a bootable USB drive for Windows installation.
  • When Boot Camp Assistant asks you to set the size of the Windows partition, remember the minimum storage-space requirements in the previous section. Set a partition size that meets your needs, because you can't change its size later.

2. Format the Windows (BOOTCAMP) partition

When Boot Camp Assistant finishes, your Mac restarts to the Windows installer. If the installer asks where to install Windows, select the BOOTCAMP partition and click Format. In most cases, the installer selects and formats the BOOTCAMP partition automatically.

3. Install Windows

Unplug any external devices that aren't necessary during installation. Then click Next and follow the onscreen instructions to begin installing Windows.

4. Use the Boot Camp installer in Windows

After Windows installation completes, your Mac starts up in Windows and opens a ”Welcome to the Boot Camp installer” window. Follow the onscreen instructions to install Boot Camp and Windows support software (drivers). You will be asked to restart when done.

  • If the Boot Camp installer never opens, open the Boot Camp installer manually and use it to complete Boot Camp installation.
  • If you have an external display connected to a Thunderbolt 3 port on your Mac, the display will be blank (black, gray, or blue) for up to 2 minutes during installation.

How to switch between Windows and macOS

Restart, then press and hold the Option (or Alt) ⌥ key during startup to switch between Windows and macOS.
